$5000 Living Room Day 2 - Choosing Seating and a Rug

Today, we're continuing our series on putting together a $5000 living room from scratch. Yesterday, we met our client, saw the space and agreed upon our inspiration piece:

"Bubbles" NatureandArt on Etsy $400

Today, we're going to explore and choose seating and a rug.

The most important piece in this room will be the sofa. It is the one piece that will get the most use and will be the most expensive. As a rule of thumb, I believe in spending at least a third of the budget on the sofa, if it will be getting daily use. This way, the sofa won't have to be replaced every few years.  In this case, that would equal about $1500. This is probably the least you can expect to spend for a sofa that has the following attributes:

1) Kiln Dried Frame
via
Kiln drying removes all moisture from the wood - enabling it to keep its shape over time.

2) Glued, dowel, screwed and blocked joints

via

This will keep the frame from coming apart over time

3)Eight-way hand-tied springs or (in some cases, sinuous springs).
via Re-Nest

These will help keep your seating from sagging and bowing.

Given these perimeters,  my client and I settled on this sofa:

88" Dean Sofa in Lichen from Room and Board $1699

Whew! We've spent $2100 already! It's okay though - the rest is easier to save on. Now we need a bit of extra seating in the form of a few chairs. Since my client wants it to feel beachy, I went looking for some rattan chairs and found these:

Bennu Chair from Pier One Imports on Sale for $129.99 each

What a good deal! We're buying two,  plus two cushions to go with:
Deluxe Calliope Ivory Chair Cushion Pier One Imports $40 each

Now we could use a rug to ground the seating area. I think something a bit graphic might give a nice little edge to the room. How about this:
4X6 Safavieh Dhurrie Light Blue/Ivory CSN Stores  $153

So now our room is looking something like this:

And we're at $2948.98. Think we'll make it?
Stay tuned!
